Braun ThermoScan® 7 Review

We were recently asked to review the Braun ThermoScan® 7 thermometer which couldn't have come at a better time seeing as we've all been full of cold these past few weeks. I've had both kids off school and nursery last week due to high fevers and sickness, thankfully we had the ThermoScan to detect it. When the kids were younger we experienced many stressful evenings trying to pin them down and getting the thermometer under their tongue or wedged in an armpit whilst they're full blown screaming the house down due to teething or the flu.

How it works

The thermometer is very easy to use which is great when you have little ones who won't sit still. It does come with a handy quick start guide but to be honest I didn't need it as it's that easy to use!

First of all you need to put a hygienic cap on the end of the thermometer. You then need to change this with every use. It clicks on easily and you simply push a button to remove it. I’ve got to admit I had always thought the little caps that go on ear thermometers were simply for hygiene purposes but they also ensure accurate measurements by keeping the probe clean. The probe of the thermometer itself is pre-warmed to 34 degrees Celsius before use to avoid the possible cooling effect of inserting the probe into the ear canal.

To turn on the thermometer you need to press the on button which is clearly marked in the middle of the product. Then you are required to select your patients age. There are three options which include babies under 3 months, babies 3-36 months and all children over the age of 36 months including adults too.

You'll then need to gently place the thermometer in the patients ear ensuring it has a protective cap on the probe and press the measure button. Once the temperature has been registered it will beep and share the results on the screen practically seconds later. I love the colour coded readings to quickly detect a fever. The results will display on the screen with either a green (normal), yellow (fever) or red (high fever) light which tells you if the temperature is safe of dangerous.

I know that there are a lot of these types of thermometers on the market already with the colour coded system but I really do think its a great feature especially for first time mums. Did you know the definition of fever changes with age? What is an acceptable temperature for a four year old can be classed as a high temperature for a newborn. The unique thing about this thermometer is the fact that it takes age into account when giving you the results, e.g a temperature of 37.6 will be green for an adult and red for a bay up to 3 months. This is unique on the market.

Additional features

The backlit screen makes it really easy to see the temperature reading in a dark room and the beep to indicate the temperature has been taken isn’t so intrusive that it would wake your baby if you were taking their temperature while they were asleep which is also a bonus.

It's great to see that the Braun ThermoScan®  7 includes Age Precision® technology to help interpret your child's temperature, with three different age groups to choose from so that a more accurate temperature can be taken. It means that you really are getting the most accurate temperature reading according to the correct age group selected. It has more than a regular colour-coded display.

This smart little device also has a memory recall function and will recall the last 9 readings which is handy to keep track of your little ones temperature whilst tracking whether its come back down again or risen. The Braun ThermoScan 7 automatically displays the last recorded temperature when you turn it on, so you know right from the start what base temperature you're working from.

Overall thoughts

The overall look and feel of the Braun ThermoScan® is really nice and it's easy to use and also comes with a storage cradle which means that the thermometer is easily accessible and you can even mount the storage case to the wall in the nursery or somewhere you can easily access if needed. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Braun ThermoScan® 7 and think every parent needs to own one of these as it's definitely in my opinion the easiest way to read a child's temperature.

If you are currently expecting or have children already I would highly recommend purchasing this product as you never know when it may be needed.
