Our Christmas 2016

And just like that Christmas is over and we're in 2017! I was hoping to get this post written up sooner but I took a bit of a break over the Christmas period which I must admit was really nice but now I'm trying to play catch up. I did think of not publishing this post but I wanted to document it to have to look back on in years to come as that's the main reason I started this blog after all.

We didn't have any plans as such for Christmas since having kids I've always spent Christmas day at home as a family as I prefer being in my own surroundings, being able to wake up early, eat when we want and play with presents all day instead of going back and fourth to other people's houses and I would always be the designated driver so would mean I couldn't have a drink!

On the 23rd myself and Amelia went to see Aladdin at the Pantomime which we both really enjoyed. Her dad and I took her for the first time last year so I wanted to start a tradition which we can do every year together and I will take Harry next year too as he will be older. I thought it would be nice to have something to do together in the run up to Christmas.

On Christmas Eve we had a lazy day at home, I gave the kids their Christmas Eve basket when they woke up and we spent the day watching Christmas films, decorating gingerbread men, doing Christmas crafts and getting ready for santa coming. The kids went to bed excited in their new festive pyjamas and I set to work getting all of their presents downstairs. I think this has to be one of my favourite parts of Christmas apart from spending time with family of course. But theres no better feeling than nibbling on a carrot and mince pie and making it look like santa has been, setting out all of the kids presents and then settling down for the night ready to see the kids faces the next morning.

I had set my alarm for 5.30 on Christmas morning, don't ask why! I don't know either myself as I kept snoozing my alarm until 6.30 until I finally got up and got ready quietly before waking the kids up at 7. Amelia saw her stocking on the door from Santa and we went through to wake Harry up then sat on my bed to see what they had in their stockings. We then went downstairs to see if Santa had left any presents. The look on the kids faces when we made our way down the stairs and they saw that he had been was priceless. It makes it all worth it.

We spent the next couple of hours opening and paying with presents before the kids dad came over to see them for a bit. Once he left my parents came over around 11am and we exchanged presents and played with presents. I then cooked dinner when they had gone for the three of us which was strange and rather lonely if I'm honest especially as the kids don't really like Christmas dinner and there was no adult conversation so I was left sitting on my own eating whilst scrolling down my Facebook feed seeing everyone with their families all enjoying Christmas dinner.

I always remember Christmas dinner being one of my favourite moments of the day growing up. Helping my mum cook, setting up the table and then all pouring our drinks and sitting down to open crackers with each other. I just didn't enjoy it at all this year and I didn't even set the table up properly as I didn't see the point for the three of us. Having said all that this Christmas was by far my favourite since having kids!

Once dinner was over we spent the rest of the day watching films and playing with new toys. The kids received so much this year I honestly didn't know where I was going to keep everything! They were so very lucky. Harry received an Ikea play kitchen from Santa which I hacked and spray painted a few days before. Both of the kids love playing with it so it was definitely worth all the hassle and having to sit outside until the fumes had disappeared! I might share a post on how I did it as I've had a lot of questions since. In fact the photo I shared on Instagram is my most liked last year!

Boxing day was different this year, for the past four years we have always gone to Andys parents house for the day but this year the kids went with their dad instead and I went to my parents. It was a lovely day but it didn't feel the same without the kids but I guess I have to get used to sharing Christmas from now on.

I hope you all had the most magical Christmas with your own family and friends. As much as I don't want to wish the year away, I can't wait for next Christmas already!

  1. Looks like you had the perfect Christmas Kerry. I can't believe you set your alarm that early. Lol We didn't go down until 9.30am actually. You have to make a list for Harry's birthday now. ;) I have to do the same for Chloe but I think I am only getting her one or two presents.

  2. Sounds like you had a lovely chilled day Kerry. I am like you and prefer to spend the day at home, especially when my kids were younger. I loved following your Christmas over on instagram stories, especially your living room when it looks all cosy at night x
