Life Lately - Working From Home

A couple of weeks ago I made the decision to hand in my notice at work, although it wasn't something that I particularly wanted to do as I loved my job I think I have made the right decision. I am looking forward to working from home again, being self-employed, and being my own boss. I have lots of exciting things lined up which I can't wait to share with you all once I get back on my feet. At the end of the month I will be working from home again and one thing I suffer from occasionally is feeling un-motivated from time to time which results in a lack of productivity. I am currently working on setting up a rota/set work hours so I can sit down and concentrate during those hours to get my work done instead of doing an hour here or there and often getting distracted by Facebook and other going ons.

I am lucky that Amelia is now back in school and has started full time in reception this year which means I do have a lot more time on my hands compared to over the summer. Although Harry doesn't nap so I can't really do much work during the day, I can however answer emails and do other smaller tasks which don't require a lot of concentration, and then do the majority of my work such as writing blog posts and more detailed tasks when the kids are at their dads on the day I used to work in my part-time job. My mum has also offered to help out on the day she would usually have the kids on one of my work days so that means I'll have a morning there too which I can use as a "work" day.

One of the downsides to working from home and being your own boss means that you can often feel unmotivated and instead of getting to work you can easily get distracted by the TV or spend hours browsing the internet. I've often wanted to stay in my pyjamas all day watching Netflix but as I've been doing school runs for the past year and a half I find that getting up earlier and getting dressed for the day definitely helps. I don't currently have an office anymore as Harry is now in that room but I do have a desk space which is currently in my bedroom. I would love to have an office again one day, maybe when I own my own home! But for now I'll have to make do with my desk. I have been thinking of moving it downstairs in the living room under the stairs as there's a lovely little space for one but I'm worried that the kids will knock my iMac over!

I've been preparing myself for when the time comes to handing over my uniform and swap serving customers all day to sitting in front of the computer. I've been stocking up on office supplies and have been wanting to organise some sort of filing system for all of my paperwork now that I'll be working full time from home. I have recently bought a filing cabinet to go under my desk and have found this desk top organisation from Engelbert Strauss which will be great for any paperwork I need to access quickly.

I am really determined to make this work, it's been a dream of mine for many years to work from home and now that I've taken the plunge to do it full time instead of along side a part time job I am even more excited for what the future holds.

If you're thinking of taking the plunge to working from home or already work for yourself I'd love to hear below.

Here are a few posts which may help you if you're thinking of working from home or just in need of some motivation.

  6. I've just planned a new blogging schedule as I realised I was working far too much which is really easy to do when you work from home - it's all about balance though.

So......I work every weekday morning 9:30am-12noon then have a proper lunch and either do something for fun, exercise, meet friends, bake or get on top of the housework from 12-2pm. Then I have another power hour of work 2pm-3pm before getting the kids from school.

3pm-6pm I am with the kids and they have my full attention.

    6pm-7:30pm - more blog work

Then I am free for the rest of the night. I also work for 5 hours every other Saturday. It's worked out ok so far (although I've only been doing it a week) but it pays to be strict on yourself xx

  11. Good luck working from home and going self-employed :) I'm sure you'll be fab at it but like you say it's getting motivated and not getting distracted that's the hard part. I currently work part time (2 days) and spend the rest of my days looking after the family. My hubby has his own business which means he can work from home or wherever really but it can be tough at times. Looking forward to an update on how you get on :)

  19. I work from home full time, as well! :) I turned in my notice after my first son was born and they decided to let me work from my home office instead! It's been tough to manage a full time career and two littles in the house, but I wouldn't trade this time with my babies for anything. Let me know if you need any tips! <3

  21. Good luck! I recently quit my job because of an abusive boss, unfortunately I don't have anything lined up but needed to leave for my sanity and physical health. Something will come up, but unemployment is really difficult.
