HOW TO INCREASE COMMENTS ON YOUR BLOG

Wondering why no one is commenting on your blog posts? Don't worry it's not because they don't like your blog or what you're writing, it's more than likely that they don't know your blog exists or that you've posted a new post. Some blogs with different topics or niches don't naturally generate a lot of comments which is why you need to get your blog posts seen! Bloggers love comments, and it's such a joy when someone takes the time to leave a comment on your post as it shows that people like what you are posting. When no one comments on your posts or you don't get a lot of comments you may be left thinking that people don't like what you're writing.

There are a few reasons why people may not be commenting and a few steps you can take to fix that. Hopefully by making some of these changes you'll be a step in the right direction to better reader engagement.

Here are my top tips on how to increase comments on your blog:

Comment on other blogs

This is probably one of the easiest ways to receive more comments on your own blog, simply by commenting on other blogs! You have to give to receive!

1. Create a list of around 20 blogs that you read regularly and make sure you visit them as often as you can to see if they have any new content. I tend to do this daily if I'm not too busy, but once a week would be fine too.

2. Dedicate half an hour a evening or an hour once a week if that's more realistic for you to sit down and scroll through Bloglovin' or your reading platform and comment on any posts you find interesting. This is great for getting new readers engaged who wouldn't otherwise known about your blog.

3. If you are a new blogger find some blogs which are relatively new and of the same topic as you as that's a great way of building new engagement and will also generate more traffic to your blog. Don't spam other blogs by leaving your link in the comments, most blogs have a comment form these days where you can insert your link or it will automatically do it for you via your social media platform. Chances are the blogger will see your comment and click on your URL and pop over to leave a comment on your blog.

4. Leave 'real' comments. None of this "Hey great post" malarkey! You'd be pretty annoyed if dozens of bloggers left comments like that on your posts so don't do the same on others. Take the time to actually read the blog post and write a comment from the heart, it doesn't have to be an essay but a couple of sentences is fine. This shows that you have actually taken the time to read the post and not just scrolled down and you may make some new friends!

Respond to blog comments

It's pretty simple - if you don't respond to blog comments then no one is going to bother commenting again when you haven't taken the time to reply. This doesn't mean you need to reply straight away, especially if you receive a lot of comments on a daily basis. Although it is polite to reply to them when you can. I tend to sit down and reply to as many comments as I can on a few posts in one evening.

By responding to comments you are building a relationship with your readers which are more likely to come back and comment again on new content as they can see that you are interacting with your readers.

Join some link parties

This is a fantastic way to receive more comments by simply linking up to your favourite blog link ups each week/month with your relevant post. Make sure you comment on a few posts (or you could go through all of them if you have time) and you will receive some comments in return!

You didn't ask for any comments

When people ask me why they aren't getting any blog comments the most frequent oversight I notice is that they haven't actually asked their readers to comment! I don't mean a "Hellooooo, comment on my post" but it's so easy - a simple "Let me know what you think in the comments below" or a "Do you agree" will get your readers to comment. Simply by asking a question you are making a conversation starter and drawing people in. If a post I happen to read doesn't have a question and simply ends I'm less likely to comment and click on the X to go somewhere else. Don't end your post by shutting the door... let your readers know that you want to know what they thought about the post and tell them what you want them to talk about.

A post which is of a controversial topic or a conversation starter will naturally get more comments however more often than not I will end the post by asking one of the following questions:

"When did you"
"Do you like to"
"Have you ever"
"Let me know if"
"What did you think"

So there you have it, my tips on how to increase comments on your blog. I hope these tips are helpful for those of you who are wondering why you're not receiving many comments at all. Of course there are many blogs out there who receive hundreds of comments daily without engaging whatsoever and are still successful but if you do have the time to do the tips above I would highly recommend it.

Remember you have to put in the effort too, if you want to build interaction on your blog.

Let me know if you found this post helpful. Do you do these tips already or will you be trying some of them out?

  1. Exactly this! My blog is fairly new (less than a year) and I get a fair amount of comments and I do exactly these kind of things. Linkies can be a great way to find new blogs and get a few people visiting you as well - I've found many of my favourites through various linkies!

  2. Good tips. I wasn't getting comments on my first posts back after I took a two month break, but since I started commenting on other blogs the amount of comments has gone up. You definitely can't be a lazy blogger - if you want to get comments you have to comment on other people's blogs. :)

  3. Thanks you for the tips. I get very few comments one my posts and do comment on a lot of other blogs. I think it might be my audience? They generally are mums and parents who are looking for things to do with the kids in my area. I think they just read my suggestions and that's it.....I will try asking a question at the end :)

  23. I've been writing my blog primarily as a way to use my brain during long breastfeeding sessions rather than wasting too much time on Facebook. But it's only now, five months later, that I'm actually thinking about being more proactive in terms of engaging readers. This post (combined with the daily checklist you posted recently) has made me realise I'm such a lazy blogger! Thanks for the guilt trip, I needed it desperately!

    1. Hi Laura, you're definitely not a lazy blogger, it all depends on what you want to get out of your blog really. If it's mainly for you to brain dump and document your feelings/life privately for yourself to look back on then maybe you don't particially want readers to engage however if you want to share your blog with others then it can be a great way at being more pro-active. x

So thank you for letting me know it IS the proper etiquette to reply. When you start a new blog (first one, I mean) it's hard to know! Lots of other good tips in here too. Thanks.

  31. Great set of tips! I love getting and reading comments on my blog - it makes me feel like there are actually people out there! I think a lot of people don't comment because they're never sure what to say!! At least, that is some feedback I've had when I ran a blog survey of my readers a little while ago! I endeavour to reply to every comment I receive, setting aside some time in the week to go through them all xx

    ReplyDelete
  32. I couldn't agree more when it comes to answering to comments. It really does connect you with readers and quite frankly I find bloggers, who don't answer to comments, just rude (ok, not talking about the ones who get literally thousands of them, no one is a superhuman). Specially when someone directly adresses them in the comments, asking for some advice or tips. Of course in the end everybody chooses their own way of doing things, but for me it's normal that by taking things like feedback for granted and not investing in the relationship with the readers, a blogger just looses a lot of readers.. :))

Thanks for the great tips. I only started up my new blog seven months ago, and it's been a learning process to know how to build that community so that the writing is read instead of just taking up quiet space on the internet. :) It's been hard to find the time to invest in building that community, but I'm enjoying getting acquainted with some of the other lovely blogging ladies out there. :)
