PREGNANCY #2 | 20 WEEK SCAN

I turned 20 weeks pregnant last Friday and yesterday we went for our 20 week scan at the hospital. It actually came around pretty quick but I'm assuming that's because we already found out the gender at a private scan four weeks previously. I can imagine that if we hadn't booked an early scan then the weeks would have been dragging and I would have been getting more and more impatient so I'm glad that we did.

We arrived at the antenatal ward for our appointment at 9am and were made to wait for the screening room to become unoccupied. Whilst waiting I got that nerve-racking feeling of something being wrong. I don't know why, we saw our baby boy just four weeks ago and everything looked fine. I had also been feeling movement from around 16 weeks and regular kicks every day from about 17 weeks so why would there be any reason for concern. But I guess when you've had things go wrong with previous pregnancies it makes you so much more paranoid.

We were finally called through to the screening room and I was asked to lie down on the bed, once the sonographer had rubbed the gel all over my belly and started moving the wand I immediately felt at ease, he looked bigger which was a good sign and his heart was beating away at around 100 beats per minute. The sonographer did all of her measurements which seemed to take a while, but it was nice to be able to see all the different parts of his little body. She was really nice too and explained everything to us as she was doing it.

I don't seem to remember the 20 week scan being so thorough with Amelia but that was nearly three years ago now. Baby boy had his hands covered over his face the whole time and wouldn't budge so we had to walk around for 20 minutes and pop back to get the last measurements. We both thought his facial features looked liked just Amelia's did at this stage which her button nose, so it will be nice to see if they are similar when he's born. It was pretty amazing to see him yawn and also stretching out his fingers. I'm glad that everything is okay and he's perfectly healthy. I remember saying to Andy whilst sat in the waiting room "What if he turns out not to be a boy!" but we could both clearly see that he was indeed a boy even though she tried not to show that area.

We weren't asked if we wanted to know the sex which I thought was slightly weird, even though we already knew but what if we hadn't? I thought they were supposed to ask you. Although having said that she did let slip a few times and we both heard her saying he ha ha! I guess if we didn't know already we would have been asking her anyways.

I won't be having another scan this pregnancy unless there is any call for concern towards the end. Which feels strange as I had another scan at 25, 30, 35, 38 and 40+ weeks with Amelia as I was high risk and she was always measuring big but I think I may book us another 4d scan and have one done in HD at the same place we got Amelia's done and our gender scan last month.

Did you wait to find out the gender at the 20 week anatomy scan or were you impatient like us me and booked an early gender scan?

  3. Such a clear picture. My local hospital now have a policy of not telling you the sex due to getting it wrong so much! They now state its an anomaly scan and not a sexing scan! I will be paying for a 4d sexing scan for number 5 lol to impatient!

  5. I think you have to request it these days because of gender selection abortions etc. Glad everything's ok though.

  6. How lovely to get such a thorough scan of your boy and it's so great that everything is fine with him too. My scan with TL was at 19 weeks and it was horrible, short, impersonal and we weren't asked if we wanted to know his gender, Jacek wasn't even invited to look at the screen so we booked a gender scan for that night and found out he was a boy. It was all baby blue from then :) xo

  7. really happy all is well with number two. With my first boy we didn't find out the gender, but the sonographer let it slip accidentally. We were never sure though. With this one, we wanted to know for practical reasons, so we had a private gender scan. x

  8. Fab news all is well. I was very paranoid and was always counting down to the next midwife appointment or scan. My friend bought us a scan as a gift so we found out at 16 weeks too :) X

  10. I've got my 20 week scan next week and I am so desperate to find out the sex. Not knowing is driving me crazy and I just want to start buying clothes and nursery bits now. I have no idea how people don't find out until the birth, I couldn't handle not knowing! Time is dragging and the next week can't come soon enough! x

  11. Great news that all is well. I booked an early gender scan too - just couldn't wait any longer to find out what we were having.

  12. With our first, we booked a private gender scan at 16 weeks. With this one, we had the Harmony Test done and found out at 13 weeks that we were having another girl. We didn't have the Harmony Test purely for gender, it was primarily for chromosome abnormality testing.

  13. Our hospitals policy is to assume you don't want to know the gender, as not to upset anyone by mistake if they don't want to know, which was the case for us with John. So when we wanted to know with David we had to ask. Although saying that, there's some hospitals not far from us that have a strict policy on no revealing genders.

I can remember being terrified before the 20 week scan though. I think it's worse because you know they check EVERYTHING and can tell if there's any heart defects, cleft palates, ect...at that point. Glad all is ok though! xo

  14. We were impatient and had the gender scan early. We went for our 20 week "in depth" scan last Tuesday and I was nervous all the way there almost to the point of tears. Then he started kicking and moving as if to say "hey, I'm here and I'm ok." It's the neatest thing to feel him move!

  15. A wonderful picture, so clear.

Our hospital do tell you but only if you ask them.
I know so many hospitals won't though

  18. I desperately wanted to know, however she was in such a scrunched up position there was no way to see! We then decided to just leave it as a surprise! I did had a grwoth scan at 35 weeks but because my husband wasn't with me I declined to know the gender seeing as I only had a few weeks left! Will definitly find out with the next one though!

Glad all is well with boy bump!
