Creative Ways to Display Your Family Photos

Digital photography is both a blessing and a curse to the humble family photo. We now have the luxury of happily snapping away without the fear of running out of film; firing off twenty almost-identical pictures then spending twenty minutes picking our favourites; getting immediate access to our photos instead of loitering impatiently in front of Snappy Snaps until our prints are finally done. However, having unlimited numbers of digital pictures comes at a price: getting your hands on a physical copy of your favourite snap requires more time and effort than it once did.

In some ways, not having hard copies of every single photograph we’ve ever taken is quite a good thing: not every picture is album-worthy and there are only so many drawers we can dedicate to negatives. It does, however, mean that each physical copy of a picture you display in your home has been consciously chosen: each one counts that little bit more, and how you choose to display it counts just as much. Here are a few creative ideas for mounting family photos around your home:

String and Clips

This looks particularly good with Polaroids, but a strip of standard 6x4” prints hung with clips from a piece of string or decorative yarn look delightfully artsy and homespun. You could hang them in strips from your walls, loop them over mirrors and picture frames or hang them from the banisters like bunting; your options are endless. If you don’t fancy making your own, Urban Outfitters sell a readymade version

Make Your Own Photo Coasters

This is one for the creative types out there! Coasters make a brilliant display space for photos: they’re roughly the right size and shape, get used all the time, and the flat surface lends itself perfectly to a picture. Some professional printing services make photo coasters to order, but the Frugal Girls blog has instructions for making your own – they look so simple they’d make a great family craft project.

Have a Canvas Printed

Having one of your photos printed on canvas is a brilliant, relatively inexpensive way of making your own personalised wall art. Start with a good quality photo and have it resized and professionally printed to suit your space. If you fancy something more unusual, Canvas Republic offers a selection of special effects for your print, switch to sophisticated black and white, turn it to Pop Art, or opt for a triptych instead of just one picture.

Create a Photo-Clock

Brilliantly simple and simply brilliant: all you need is a battery-powered quartz clock mechanism and a bare wall. Mount your clock mechanism with plenty of empty space around it, and fill in the hours with your photos. Voila!

  4. We really need to display our photos. I take so many and never print them! I'm going to make books with our holiday snaps and use favourite photos from whenever on a photo collage wall. When baby arrives I'd love a phone case with both of my kids on!
