The Healthier Mama

If you've been following me on Instagram for some time now there's no way of hiding that I love my Chinese takeaways and Macdonald's meals several times a every week! For the past couple of weeks in an attempt to eat healthier I've been cutting out the fast food and shopping healthier too. It's been going pretty well so far, I'm not going to lie and say I'm not eating fast food and I didn't have a Macdonald's last night for dinner but I am definitely doing better than I had originally thought.

I've actually enjoyed eating healthier meals and snacks and it's made such a difference in my skin, mood and not feeling as bloated. I feel healthier and that was my main goal I wanted to achieve. As well as loosing a bit of the food belly I've got going on from comfort eating ha ha! I love food, it makes me happy but if I can cut out the bad food and switch it with healthier foods then that's what I'm going to do!

Here's a little insight into what i've been eating that past couple of weeks:

Breakfast

You know the saying "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" well its true! I've never been a breakfast person, I think mainly because I don't like eating so early in the morning. I have enjoyed making smoothies and a few varied foods instead of the usual marmite on toast which I used to eat all the time.

Blueberry Delight - Frozen blueberries, 2 bananas, greek yogurt, agave nectar.

This has become a favourite breakfast of mine, its really easy to make and yummy too! Its basically just granola, natural yogurt and kiwi on top. You can also leave it in the fridge over night if you want a smoother consistency.

I never used to like bananas but i've been trying to eat more of them recently. Here we have a toasted bagel with banana slices, agave nectar and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Again pretty much the same as above but on toast.

Poached eggs and smoked salmon on bagels. I think this is hands down my favourite breakfast to have, it's so filling and good in protein too.

Most mornings I like to start the day with a glass of orange juice. It definitely wakes me up and its got a lot of Vitamin C which is really good for you.

Granola fruit pot - Granola, strawberry yoghurt, strawberries and banana. This is another easy breakfast and you can change the fruit around.

Banana & Kiwi smoothie another favourite of mine.

Lunch

Ever since I bought my panini machine a couple of months ago I've be addicted to paninis! I think I had one daily for over a month! I've cut down a little bit now as too much bread makes you bloated and I was wondering why I was so bloated all of the time. My favourite is bacon, brie and cranberry but i've been trying to switch them up a bit. This is a tuna panini. They are great easy lunches or snacks and great if you don't have much time to prepare lunch.

I've been really enjoying soup for lunch lately and because its something Amelia will eat too we've been having it at least 2-3 times a week. My favourites are Leek & Potato and Broccoli & Stilton.

Tuna & cucumber toasted bagel.

This is a bit of a mixture type of lunch but its one that I really enjoy. I'm not really a fan of tomatoes or olives but i've been trying to eat them.

Broccoli & Stilton soup

This is one of the lunches I took to work this week, I don't usually take lunch in with me but i've been getting peckish lately so thought I would use one of Amelia lunch boxes and create an adult version of her bento foods. Here I have crackers, grapes, brie and parma ham.

Dinner

This is probably the meal of day I struggle with the most, I went through a stage of cooking every night a few months ago and that went down the pan and I ended up having take aways for 3-4 nights a week and then paninis the rest so since I've got back into cooking I'm trying to cook at home at least 5 nights a week, one night I'm at work and the other can be a takeaway.

Chicken wrapped in parma ham, prawns, boiled new potatoes, asparagus and broccoli.

Salmon in chilli, boiled new potatoes, broccoli and asparagus.

Prawn, Rocket & Olive Pizza - recipe here

Snacks

Snacks have been the worst change for me, I used to snack on crisps, chocolate and ice lollies every day. I would also have all of these before bed too after a big meal, even though I probably wasn't overall hungry it just became a habit. I've tried cutting down on the junk food and have been trying fruit instead.

Frozen grapes - I've never had these before until last week and I have no idea why I hadn't tried them before. Such a healthy snack and stops me from being tempted to have ice lollies so much.

If you were to look at my fridge around three weeks ago it would have been bare, with no fruit or veg, now that's a different story! I've been buying plenty of fruit and making fruit plates for snacks which I've been really enjoying.

I've never been good at drinking water, my choice of drink has always been Dr Pepper which I have many cans of a day. I never drink water until recently, i've been trying to drink it more by adding fruits and infusing it in the fridge to get more flavour. I've had to force myself to drink it but I think my skin is really dehydrated with all the fizzy drinks I need some water in me! If you have any tips do let me know!

I love the fact that I have been eating healthier, and actually sticking to it. Like I said before, Im not cutting junk food out of my diet completely but I will over time. I am pretty impressed that I'm not eating takeaways every day ha ha!
