Toddler Activities: Drawing Fun

Drawing has always been one of Amelia's favourite activities, aside from running around causing chaos she could quiet happily draw for a good half hour at a time. Every day either before or after lunch we sit down at the kitchen table and get out the colouring books, crayons and felt tips. She used to draw in the living room, but that resulted in many coloured walls and the coffee table becoming a target for her masterpieces! I feel much more relieved with her sitting at the table as she can't escape and draw all over everything in sight and I have been using the Messy Me floor mat on the table during 'drawing time' to keep the table clean too. I can just wipe it clean afterwards and not worry about the mess as she is a messy drawer and ends up getting it everywhere else but the paper usually. I love watching her draw, the concentration on her face and the excitement when she has drawn something she really likes. I could sit for hours and watch her... if only she would sit for that long!

  6. It is a lovely thing for them to enjoy isn't it. My daughter has recently discovered crayons and, when she is not tipping them all over the floor, she loves to sit and colour!

  9. My 4 year old son has never shown an interest in colouring - he would much rather run around pretending to be spiderman! Whereas my 2 year old daughter loves it, she will happily sit at the table for ages with her colours/playdoh/stickers while I am preparing food. Its lovely to see her creations. I recently read a great idea - give your child only one sketch book at a time, let them fill it with doodles then when its full put the date on it, pop it on a shelf and then start another so when their older you can look back at their books full of creations - such a sweet idea! :)
    Lovely photos of Amelia x

  12. Definitely not drawing here. He's 3 and while lots of his friends are drawing recognisable faces and cars, we still have scribbles and the occasional 'circle' or line. He'd prefer to be outside over anything else - walking along walls, riding his bike or on the trampoline.

Arty wise, it's all about scissors.

  14. Ah Harry is almost 4 and has only VERY recently started drawing, he loves it now but we do need to expand his (very limited) collection of crayons, pencils and pens. He is definitely a typical boy; generally likes being outside creating havoc. Actually, he can (and does) create havoc inside, I just prefer it outside and that has the added bonus of generally tiring him out more! ;) x

  15. Emma is 4 now and she loves drawing and play pretend. She can play it for hours on end! When she was Amelia's age she used to love painting!

  16. Very good colouring. Love it! I try and try to get my 4yo interested but I guess he will one day. He once drew all over our dining room wall but I was so astounded at him actually going to town with all the crayons that I let him do his Banksy impersonation and left it there for a month or so. It made me smile so much and was easy to paint over.

  20. What a great activity to love! Drawing is so relaxing and you get a lovely result at the end of it too. We love reading and when we aren't reading we are riding bikes, scooting, running and climbing. Anything that means running about in the sunshine!

  21. Mine love drawing too. My eldest is 3 and going through a love of notepads stage she has her little books of drawings but my eldest just loves to create chaos and scribble and poke holes in paper.

  22. i don't have a toddler (or a child) but some of my favourite things to do at that sort of age was bake with my nan, draw, and drink 'tea' ..which was just warm milk with a tiny bit of sugar.

  26. I love the way Amelia draws with both hands :) We love drawing here too, although felt pens are currently banned after a 'serious' accident that no-one would admit too!

  33. omg all those pens and crayons!!! Amazing!

S's favourite thing is drawing too; she does it all the time. I buy big rolls of wallpaper lining paper from Homebase and roll it out across the floor for her.

  34. Gwen adores drawing too! I did have a drawing station in the kitchen where she could sit and colour whenever she felt like it, but I've had to put the pens on a shelf because she kept 'illustrating' on the furniture....:-/
