So you have been reading a few of your favourite blogs for some time now and finally decided to take the plunge and start up your own blog. But where do you start? Well today I have some tips to share with you on how to start your very own blog!
I am by no means an expert in blogging and have only been blogging for a under two years, but in that short space of time I have learnt a lot and have managed to somewhat get my blog established to the point where I now have more than just my mum and Nana as regular readers.
Decide on a blog name
You will want to come up with a name that is easy to remember and that will stand out. Keep it short and simple no silly xxx's and - in between every word. You want readers to be able to remember your blog and find it easily. Before I set up my own domain last July and made the switch from blogspot.com to .com my blog was originally found at www.oh-so-amelia.blogspot.com yes very annoying to remember which is why I changed it to ohsoamelia when I got the ".com". Think of a name which will stay with you for years, perhaps think what your blog will be about and who your audience will be.
Purchase your own domain
I would highly suggest to get your own domain. You can purchase one for as little as £5 for the year and it will help you in the long run. I didn't purchase mine for a few months after I initially started blogging as I had no idea how much I would love blogging and if I would even stick to it. But if you are serious about blogging and making a living from it I would recommend getting your own domain early on. You will also need your own web hosting which I would recommend Bluehost.
Write what you would like to read not what you think others would
Start blogging for yourself, whether that is to document your family and daily life, or to share things your love with other people. Find a style of writing that feels like yours and stick with it - also write in your voice and nobody else's this will help your readers interact with your more.
Set up social media
You will want to set up a Facebook page and Twitter account for your blog so your readers can keep up to date with all your latest posts. Try to keep them with the same name instead of something completely random, that way your readers can easily find you. If your name has already been taking perhaps add 'blog' at the end of it. Other sites you can sign up to are Pinterest, Instagram, Google + and Bloglovin'.
Don't forget photos
I add a photo to EVERY post, I think posts without images are boring and they don't draw the reader in. When scrolling down my blog feed I am usually first drawn towards the images. Also when adding more than one photo make sure they are all the same size! There's nothing more irritating that different sized images. Also break up long paragraphs with images, it will make the post more interesting.
You want your readers to keep coming back, if you post regularly you will gain regular readers. If possible post 3-5 posts a week and if you're a keen blogger then perhaps post daily. If you have a busy schedule in the home try and blog at least once a week so your readers don't forget about you.
Working with brands
If you have started your blog just to earn money and get freebies I will tell you it will take you a while and lot of hard work! Ask any blogger... they don't just come flying at you. It takes time to build up a relationship with brands as well as establish your blog. I didn't get my first review product until I had been blogging for at least 8 months, I didn't start it for this but the opportunities came along which I am very thankful for. Same goes for sponsored posts I didn't get my first one until my blog was 8 months old. Of course everyone would eventually like to earn a bit of extra cash from their blog and you can do this by being patient. If you are looking to work with brands in the future there are many PR agencies such as total media agency on Twitter which you can follow, as well as many hashtags which have opportunities for bloggers. But like I said they will come to you.
Last but not least don't get dragged in with stats! Don't worry about the page views, rankings or links - most of all have fun!
