Novice in the kitchen

One of my New Year resolutions this year or goals if you wish is to experiment more in the kitchen and cook at least five meals a week. I have stuck to the five meals a week so far and have really enjoyed cooking healthier meals instead of having ready meals or takeaways. I am a lover of fast food but more recently I have really been enjoying cooking meals. Since Andy works he isn't home for dinner time and I think that's one of the main reasons I slacked at it. I didn't see the point in cooking for one person and takeaways seemed the easiest options. Of course it's not the cheapest and I found myself spending £20-40 a week on takeaways! Cooking is far cheaper and I have been learning how to food shop on a certain budget saving money in the long run. The only thing is I've been sticking to cooking the same dishes each week;
  • Roast chicken
  • Duck and toast potatoes in plum sauce
  • Prawn thai curry and noodles
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Chicken with some other sauce
As nice as they all are they do get boring after a while and I really need to experiment more and try making new tasty dishes. To help with this goal I was recently very kindly sent a Kenwood hand mixer to help me out in the kitchen along with a new cookbook to take part in the New Year New Me campaign held by Intellicig. For the longest time now I have wanted a mixer of some sort, I would love a kitchen aid but I honestly don't think I would get much use of it it so a hand mixer was next on my list of appliances to purchase. They can be used for baking, making soups, and sauces, the options are endless!

This week I have been experimenting and even cooked up two new meals to add to the menu which I made the sauces from scratch go me! I also whipped up some cream for a desert as Andy is always moaning that he never get's pudding.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using the hand mixer and can't wait to get more use out it it especially to make soups and cakes! Andy will be in for a treat! I will write a follow up post in a few months time to let you all know how i'm getting along with my goals.

Are you sticking to your new year resolutions so far?

* I was sent a Kenwood mixer for the purpose of this post.

  2. If you have any left overs from the roast chicken or casserole you could make a pie & top it with either pastry or mashed potato.
    Pasta bake is really quick & easy; mix pasta with tinned tomato,mozzarella, any cooked meat,peppers & sweetcorn. Make sure the pasta is covered (may need to add some water)& cook for 25min @ 200c.
    Hope this helps! Love reading your blog. If you have a minute please take a look at my blog, Im new to all this & would like some feedback!

  3. Do you have a slow cooker? They are amazing. You can put a whole chicken in (breast side down) with nothing else. Leave on all day and then the meat just falls away. Then u can use the chicken for sandwiches, or a curry, or we like chicken in a mustard sauce (just fry some onions in olive oil till soft, add a stock cube and some water, add a splash of white wine, boil down then add a dollop of creme fraiche and a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard) yum. Another great easy one is cooking a ham - good for a main meal & sandwiches & really cheap. xxx

  4. I'm the same. I'm not a great cook and have always stuck to fast food, but am really trying to get into cooking home meals a lot more recently. There's always such a great sense of achievement when I do get round to cooking my own thing. :)

  5. Wow this looks fab, I didn't even know they did a handmixer. I have been coveting the K-Mix but it's a little out of my price range. This looks more realistic. I shall look forward to seeing how you get on with it.
