Review: Save Money With SodaSteam

For those of you who may not already know, I have a huge thirst for fizzy drinks. Dr pepper being the main culprit and some people may think I drink far too many cans a day. I don't drink any hot drinks as I don't like tea or coffee and I'm not a huge water drinker. There's nothing better than opening a cold can fresh from the fridge - the first sip is just a-mazing!

I have been given the challenge to see how much money I can save by switching from can's of fizzy drinks to using a SodaStream and here I will be sharing the outcome! I was very kindly sent a SodaStream to review for the purpose of this challenge and to see if I could really save money by making my own drinks at home. Over the duration of a week I documented how many fizzy drinks I consumed and have worked out how much could save. It has made me realise I spend far too much on fizzy drinks and if I opted for the SodaStream instead it could save me a lot of money in the long run!

Here's a little bit about the SodaStream

The SodaStream turns ordinary tap water into sparkling water and soda in just seconds. These drinks are not only fun to make but better value for money. The drinks maker comes with a 60 litre aluminium gas cylinder and one carbonating bottle, so you can make up to 60 litres of your favourite sparking drinks.

There are now over 50 specially formulated mixes for you to choose from, so you can make fresh soda, with 50% less sugar and carbs than leading store bought drinks. You can make it the way you want, with more or less bubbles, more or less sugar, it's your choice! Also by buying and using a SodaStream it is estimated you will save the environment from around 1,000 bottles and cans over 1 year, so you can help to rid the world of plastic bottles.

The results

In an average week I would consume around 30 cans of Dr Pepper this works out to be 5 six packs at £3.50 each (unless on offer) so lets say I spend £20 a week on the cans that's £80 a month, including the odd Dr pepper I would buy when out and about lets round it up to £100 a month. It may not sound much when you put it like that but when you could be spending far less by using a SodaStream it really does put it into perspective. Especially as that's £1200 a year!

Of course you do have to folk out and buy a SodaStream if you don't already own one but the cheapest is available at just £35.00 and the Genesis pictured above is £59.99 so it's still saving you money.

After you have bought your Sodastream of choice all you need to buy is the mixer. Sodastream have their own version of Dr Pepper called Dr pete which I have been drinking for the last few weeks. For this bottle of Dr Pete it would cost you just £2.99 and one bottle makes up to 12 litres of drink.

Meaning I would only need to buy a new bottle every couple of weeks costing around £6.00 a month making that £72 a year! Of course after adding up your SodaStream and gas cylinder refills you are looking at say £200 for the whole year thats a saving of £1000!!

Imagine what I could do with this money... the options are endless!
  1. Put into savings for Amelia
  2. Help towards the food shop
  3. Put in a mortgage fund
  4. Book a holiday
  5. Treat myself to some new clothes
So overall I would highly suggest buying a SodaStream if you drink a lot of fizzy drinks and spend a lot on branded drinks. There are so many flavours to choose from there's something for everyone and they are also great for when the family is around or hosting parties as you don't need to buy lots of bottles of pop.

Although I won't be giving up my love for Dr Pepper, I have definitely cut down on buying cans as they are quite expensive especially with the amount I buy every week, I will be putting all of the money I would have spent on the Dr Pepper into a savings tin and then put it into a saving account until I decide what to do with it.

Have you cut down on anything recently?
