Did you know that today is the Chinese New Year? More than 1.5 billion people all around the world will be celebrating the Chinese New Year - this is a time for gathering with family, honouring ancestors and of course eating! This holiday is celebrated at the beginning of each year in locations which utilise the lunar calendar. This year marks the year of the Horse, which is one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. It is said to bring prosperity and wealth.
The traditional Chinese New Year celebration lasts 15 days. This makes it the longest and most important festival for Chinese all over the world. The Chinese New Year is seen as the perfect time to do some spring cleaning. Traditionally, it was believed that cleaning house for the new year’s celebrations swept bad luck away and helped ensure good fortune in the year to come.
I recently found a really fun infographic which tells you which animal you are along will a load of fun facts. I am born in 1989 meaning I am a snake. Apparently I have good wisdom, communication and sympathy.
Happy Chinese New Year!
