10 First Dance Songs Perfect For Your Wedding Day

It’s here. The big day. The day that will see you spend the rest of your life with the person you love. Weddings are an occasion to celebrate the start of a new life together surrounded by friends and family from near and far.

And with the ceremony over, the tear-cladded napkins disposed of and the speeches finished, all that’s left is to enjoy the night. However, it’s not always that simple. The bride and groom have one more thing left to do – the first dance.

All eyes will be on you and your partner as you look to embrace to your own personal soundtrack. But what to choose? Do you go for something sentimental or a cheesy classic, a well-known ballad or generational anthem? With decades of musical prowess to choose from and such a momentous occasion, it can be easy to get a little stage fright!

But don’t worry, help is at hand. We’ve teamed up with Dancefloor DJs & Events, East Midlands-based Wedding DJ’s and Mobile Disco specialists, to bring you the 10 most popular first dance choices for newly-weds from every era.

#1 - Wherever You Will Go – The Calling

A song that’s lyrics really epitomises the sentiment of marriage and what it means. With a number of cover versions out there, nothing beats the deep voice and catching tones of the original. One everyone will be singing.

#2 - The Book of Love – Peter Gabriel

A moving tribute to how we perceive love, Peter Gabriel’s cover really touches the heart and even finishes on ‘wedding rings’. Its beautiful strings and simple lyrics will stir the mind, the soul and most importantly, your legs.

#3 - Song – Elton Song

The ‘everyman’ acoustic that puts the feeling of love in plain sight for every couple. It just proves you don’t have to be poet to say how you feel.

#4 - Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton

Clapton’s mesmerising riff draws you in to a truly beautiful homage to the ladies in our lives. A reminder that love takes many forms and beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

The master of swing will enchant the whole room with this fan favourite. Its catchy chorus and meaningful lyrics won’t fail to get those hips-a-swinging and fingers-a- clicking.

Elton’s second contribution to our list is one of his most recognised. Made famous by the ‘Lion King’, its lyrics are still as touching as ever – just make sure you don’t well enough that you can’t see where your dancing!

#9 - I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing – Aerosmith

Whilst we are on the subject of classic, it would be rude to ignore the ‘Armageddon’-Bruce Willis-scantily dressed-rock band extraordinaire’s and their classic anthem. Its certainly one way to fill up the dancefloor.

#10 - ……………………………………

Ultimately, the real choice is up to you. What song means something to you both, which tune embodies you both and reminds you just how much you mean to one another. Make your day a day for you, your family and your friends will never forget.
