Sometimes, your skincare routine can be just that - routine! If you're stuck in a rut and you don't feel as though your skin is as good as it could be, there are a few ways that you can break out of your tired habits and get a healthy glow.
Know your skin-type
It's important to know what your skin needs. If you have a normal or dry skin-type, you will need moisturiser; the drier your skin, the more you will need to apply. However, if your skin is oily, moisturising will only clog it up even more, making it more likely that you will develop blackheads and spots. If you aren't sure what type of skin you have, simply go to the beauty counter at your local department store and have a chat with the make-up experts. Once you have a clear idea of what to look for, you will find it easier to buy the most appropriate products.
Beauty is skin-deep
How do you clean your face? Soap, water and a flannel? A liquid cleanser and cotton wool? Neither of these methods is likely to be cleaning as deeply as necessary. The first step to great skin is to take steps to get rid of any dead cells that might leave your skin looking dull, as well as clogging up your pores, leading to infections and blemishes. One of the best ways to be certain of a truly clean face is to use an exfoliating cream, which contains microscopic abrasive particles that gently scrub away the dead skin, leaving you clean and smooth.
Whatever you put on your skin, or do to it, do it gently and with soft strokes. For example, don't rub at your face with a towel; pat it carefully to dry it, as rubbing can lead to redness or soreness. When applying any creams or lotions, do it with your fingertips and use small, circular motions, rather than heavy, sweeping ones. Try, also, to avoid products that contain harsh chemicals or have strong scents, as these are more likely to cause problematic reactions than their gentler, unscented counterparts.
Staying in the bath or shower for too long, too often, can rinse the natural protective oils from your skin, leaving it prone to dryness and it could even become sore. Furthermore, if you use water that is too hot, that can also remove those protective oils, so you should try to mix it so that it is pleasantly warm, or even cool.
There's little point in selecting the perfect products, cleaning thoroughly and being caring and gentle with your skin if you are just going to expose it to the elements every time you leave the house. A good sun cream, with the correct sun protection factor (SPF) for your skin, will protect you from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, which can cause age spots, wrinkles and even cancer. Although you will need to apply this more often during hot weather, if you use it in the colder months as well, you will maintain your youthful-looking skin for longer.
It can take as little as a few days for a change in your routine to pay dividends, so you may notice fewer spots or softer skin almost immediately. However, it takes longer to reap the full benefits of a good skincare routine, so perseverance is important and, in time, you will see a real difference and so will everyone else.
