Essential Buys For Winter Babies

As winter is fast approaching, it's time to stock up on the essentials that will help baby and you through the cold months ahead especially if they are due this winter! Winter babies will need more clothing than summer babies.

I know, it's hard to resist buying teeny tiny adorable baby clothes, but do you really need it all? All you need to begin with is lots of baby basics like all in ones and short and long sleeved vests. Of course having a few outfits is acceptable especially for special occasions but you don't really want to be dressing them up on a daily basis.

Here are some of the most common items that you will find most useful.

Blanket - Lightweight blankets may not provide the warmth needed during colder months. A fleece  or knitted blanket retains heat while protecting your baby from winter elements including snow, sleet, and wind.

Baby Hat - Babies heads get cold as they loose heat from their head very easily especially when out and about. Its always best to have a couple of newborn and baby hats around and perhaps one in your changing bag too. Knitted baby hats are great as they provide extra heat you can find some lovely ones on Babski Baby.

Sleeping bag - During the winter a sleeping bag is a fantastic way to keep your baby warm during the night and nap time. We have a grobag which we have in a bigger size now that she's older but when she was much younger we used it religiously if she wasn't sleeping in bed with us. You can also buy different togs depending on how cold it is where you live.

Sleep suits/vests - You will need to make sure your baby is war enough during the colder months as they can't maintain their heat like we can. Amelia was born in April so soon later it was warm and she didn't need too many. However fast forward to winter and you can never have too many! I'd suggest having about 5-7 sleepsuits minimum. Although of course we have many more than that now, but as a newborn I think thats ample. I preferred sleepsuits when Amelia was a newborn simply because they stay or and are more comfortable.

Swaddle blankets - This is of course optional and depending on whether your baby likes to be swaddled. We didn't have the pleasure of testing out any swaddle blankets as Amelia never liked to be rocked to sleep. You can get many different types of swaddle blankets including lightweight, organic, cotton and knitted.

Socks and mittens - If you don't want your newborn scratching their beautiful little face it is advisable to purchase some mittens.

What is your number one newborn essential for the winter?
