5 Ways to Document Baby's First Year

Our kids aren’t small for very long so many mum and dads document their little ones growing up through baby books and photo albums. But, as more people start to get creative with photography I’ve been looking for different ways to capture milestones and growth.

Documenting baby’s first year through photography creatively doesn’t have to be hard. Take a look at these cute ideas for inspiration for next time the stork makes a delivery.

Replace boring baby books with this fun chalkboard idea. The concept is simple: put a comfy chair in front of a chalkboard with baby sat upon it. Then, write your baby’s milestones on the chalkboard every month along with their age and take a photograph. Collect your photos over the course of the year and see just how much the little one grew.

DIY T-Shirt

This idea is extremely effective in seeing just how much your tot has grown in his or her first year and it’s relatively cheap too. Either invest in 12 onesies emblazoned with each month of the year or choose 12 plain white t-shirts and write the month on with pens. Place baby on decorated fabrics, or even just a duvet cover, and take a photo for month 1 through to 12.

Photo Mugs

Coffee is a saviour after countless late nights and early mornings. Why not personalise your mug with a collage of baby photos for every month of the year or even choose one photo a month for 12 months of baby mugs. Not only will it put a smile on your face even at the point of despair but no doubt they will be a favourite with your visitors too.

A Year-Long Video

Okay, so this one might sound like hard work but in reality, it will take less than a minute out of your day every day for one year – it’s totally worth it! The idea being that you record a one second video clip each day of your baby’s first year. At the end of the year, string them all together in a time-lapse video and watch your little one grow

Toy Letters

You know those little refrigerator magnet letters which usually get lost under the fridge? Well, why not put them to use by spelling out messages for a fun baby photoshoot series. With a close-up shot of your baby’s face against a white background, spell out a message above his or her head like “I am 3 months” or “5 months old today” and take your snap for 12 months. Done.

What do you think? How have you documented your baby’s first year in the past and would you try out any of these ideas in the future?
