Making the most of my maternity leave

In just 8 short weeks, my period of maternity leave will be coming to an end and I’ve got to leave my Little Mr with my family and go back to work. I’ve been off on leave since mid-January, giving birth to my Son in early February and I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve had such a good year and I’m not ashamed to say it but I wish I didn’t have to go back to work. I love staying at home and looking after my Son but needs must so back to work I go.

After a slow recovery from my caesarean section, I was ready to find my feet as a new Mummy showing off my Son to the world. I knew that I wouldn’t like sitting in the house all day, I wanted to get out and about and engage in adult conversation. Initially I made lots of plans to see friends on their days off from work, arranged regular trips over to my parents for the afternoon (where Nanny would feed both of us and let me drink a hot cup of tea!) and thought I’d fill the rest of the time with episodes of baking, preparing dinner and doing the household chores.

I soon came to realise that maternity leave is a very special time to bond with your newborn and all those plans of being a domestic goddess simply pilfered away. I found myself regularly sitting on the sofa of an afternoon snuggling a sleepy baby and not wanting to move. These are the days I’m never going to get back so I was happy to enjoy the cuddles (even if I was desperate for a drink or needed a wee!) We quickly settled into a routine and made plans around it; baby clinic on a Tuesday morning, visits to Nanny on a Wednesday and swimming lessons on a Thursday. On other days, we visited friends for lunch, socialised with baby group mummies and their little ones and enjoyed quieter days at home catching up on the housework or the sky plus box.

I’ve got just 8 weeks left to enjoy our well-practiced routine and then it will all be turned upside down and I’ll be back at work. I’ve got plans to enjoy the last of my maternity leave with Christmas crafting, messy play and long lazy walks with my Son in the pushchair. But if all my plans fall through, I’ll just be happy to snuggle up with my Little Mr and enjoy these precious times.

A huge thank you to Emma at Life According to Mrs shilts for guest posting on the blog today. Do be sure to stop by her blog and have a read into her life with her adorable little Mr.
