How I Got Amelia To Sleep In Her Cot - On Her Own

As you may already know up until about two months Amelia slept in our bed at night with us and then started sleeping in her cot for a couple of hours but ONLY if I climbed in with her then climbed back out once she had fallen asleep. I had got into a routine of doing this every night and she would sleep from about 10pm until 1 or 2am most nights in the cot then I would bring her back into bed when she woke up.

For the past week she has slept in her cot EVERY night and for the whole night! Also to top that off, I haven't had to climb in with her either!! I am so happy she has taken to it so well and I'm glad to have my bed back and also not having to climb in the cot.

It was actually pretty easy to be honest, and I hadn't even thought it through before doing so. One day I just decided not to climb in with her for her nap time and I placed her down in the cot gave her a teddy to hold on to and put a blanket over her. I then sat down next to her and rubbed her belly through the cot bars. She started moving so I started singing and she just lay there staring at me. After about 20 minutes I could see her eyes slowly opening and closing every few minutes and knew she was well on her way. I had stopped singing by now and just ignored her so she wouldn't get active and so be it, she fell asleep. I then waited 10 minutes or so until I knew she was definitely asleep and then creeped out of the room as quiet as possible.

I felt so pleased with myself and couldn't believe it at the same time! This was the baby who would never sleep in her cot let alone fall asleep off the boob! When ever I had tried previously she would scream and scream and stand up I'd always give in. I tried the same thing that night and like clockwork she fell asleep. The next again day she did the same and so on. There has been a couple of times where it has taken longer for her to fall asleep or she would cry slightly but eventually after lying her back down on her back again she soon realised that it was where she went to sleep. She has also gone to sleep for my mum and Andy which is fantastic and she would never go to sleep for either of them anywhere else other than in the pushchair, so this means when I come home from work on Wednesday nights when Andy is watching her she will be asleep when I get in at 11pm and I won't then have to feed her and climb into the cot until she falls asleep. Also, I might finally get to spend the night away from her soon if she keeps this up and I know she will sleep through.

I know it's only just the start and to some of you this may not even seem like a great achievement, but to me it is as we have gone 17 months of her sleeping in our bed and the past two months of me climbing in and out of her cot every nap and bed time. The fact that she now just falls asleep on her own is wonderful and such a relief!

My next acomplisment is to get her to fall asleep on her own with me out of the room, as so far I have been sat down next to her, but I don't mind this right now. She is also going down much earlier than the previous time of 10-11pm and now goes around 9pm. I would like this to get down to 7 or 8 if possible soon so I can finally get my evenings back and also will be trying her in her own bed as we have bought her toddler bed ready.

Do you have any advice or tips to give me on getting Amelia to fall asleep without us in the room?

  2. I battled with this with lil mister and I'm repeating it with LJ! I just don't learn~ but we did just about the same thing! when lil mister turned 18 months we moved him to a big bed and would sit or lay with him until he fell asleep. after a while he just went to sleep. when we took his bottle away he started sleeping through the night no problem!
we're bad though and most nights he falls asleep in our arms still and then we carry him to bed....but i just can't stop! i love the snuggles!

  3. Hello,
    Thank for sharing your experience.
Seems to me that you have achieved something, Amelia can sleep on her own, no mummy in cot. Well done. :)
