Home Improvement Hero Challenge | Home Office

Money Supermarket recently got in touch and asked whether it is possible to change the look, feel or even the functionality of a room on a low budget for their Home Improvement Hero Challenge. I was given £50 and got to the task! I decided to work on our spare room which ever since we moved in over a year ago has become a dumping ground for our never ending collection of junk! I have been wanting to turn it into an office for so long and did actually start on it at the beginning of the year but it ended up being a storage room once again so I decided to give it a go once more. I have recently been looking at storage solutions to keep all of my items elsewhere instead of cluttered up in the house as I think this would be perfect for us!

First of all I started by de-cluttering the room, I will be selling a lot of the baby items and then taking all of the other clutter to the skip or charity shops.

Once I had my empty room I got to work. I knew I wanted to keep it light and neutral so I opted for more of an airy feel. I bought some decorative stationary items and a storage box to keep all the loose bits and bobs in.

I have ordered a desk for the office but it won't be arriving for a another week so I decided to paint these storage units I was using for DVD's and use them as a desk for now. I will then be using them for storage again once the desk is here. I already had some wood paint in the shed so I got a brush and got to work painting the units. They needed a couple of coats but once done I think they look great!

I then wanted a memo board for the wall so I bought a cheap cork board from Ebay and waited for it to arrive. I also bought some floral fabric, cute heart wooden buttons and some twine as I wanted to spruce it up a little bit. It was really simple to do and it didn't take much time at all. Now I can pin all my notes and make it look pretty.

Firstly I cut the fabric to the correct size of the board with just enough left over fabric to go around the back of it to be tucked away. You can either use a glue gun or if you have a stable gun that would work just as good. I glued the fabric around all of the edges pulling it tightly and securing around the back. I then added the twine around the board and secured the small buttons on the front. I love the overall look and it makes the "office" not look so boring.

Here's the finished look! I am rather impressed with what I managed to do with £50. Of course I still need to add a few more personal touches and once the desk is in place it will all come together nicely but I think it's looking pretty good if I don't say so myself.

I had a lot of fun improving the spare room and turning it into an "office" or blogging space as I like to call it. Now I can actually be organised and be on top of everything! It just goes to show that you can change the feel and look of a room with a small budget of £50. I also recently did Amelia's Nursery with the same budget which you can see here

For a pre-agreed number of hours during the week you take care of the children in return for a bedroom, food and some cash. Depending on the country you may pocket $150 - $200 (USD). It is a fantastic way to experience not only the sites of another country but also the culture of the family you live with.
