With this scorching heatwave we've been lucky enough to have this summer its only natural to want to wear as little as possible. However it's essential that we still dress our little ones in the right clothing to protect them from the sun as much as it is possible. It's best to keep your toddler out of the sun when it's at it's peak between 10am and 4pm although this is easier said than done so it's best to be prepared!
Here are some tips I've put together for dressing your toddler for summer, from head to toe, to keep them cool yet protected for the suns harmful rays.
Cotton is a must have in the summer months, it allows air to reach your toddler's body to breathe and won't stick to their skin. Try and stick to lighter colours such as white and yellow as darker colours absorb heath rather than reflect it. I usually let Amelia wander around the house in just a nappy and a pair of cute frilly nickers in this heat and if we are going I put on a light cotton dress or T-shirt to keep her cool. Baby's sweat just like us adults so you don't want to be layering them up and overheat them.
For the beach or pool there are many swimsuit options and many have UPF 50+ which will help protect their delicate skin for longer.
To ensure your toddler's little footsies are protected outside from tripping over, splinters, standing in dirt and stubbed toes it's best to ensure they are wearing some form of footwear. In this weather flip-flop sandals or jelly shoes are most commonly worn. Aqua shoes for boys and girls are great for the beach as well as pool days and will protect their feet.
Depending on whether your toddler will keep it on their head, a hat is must have summer essential! It will keep their head cool and out of the suns UV rays as well as protect their forehead from catching the sun. You can also find a great selection of hats which have a neck guard too which is important for at the beach or long periods in the sun.
This is another great item to have if your toddler will keep them on. Sunglasses are very important for protecting the eyes from sun damage. It's always best to purchase a pair with 100% UVA and UVB protection to ensure that the lenses block out the harmful rays. Buying a pair with a strap may be a good idea for an active toddler as they won't fall of when they are running about and look for a pair that is bright or a specific character that your toddler recognises, it may help them to want to wear them.
