We took Amelia abroad on her first holiday last week. She enjoyed it so much and we are already looking at holidays for next year. We thought it would be so much hassle with a baby but suprisenly it wasn't as bad as we had expected. She slept for three hours on the plane there and was awake for the other hour and a half. She didn't even cry once and the other passengers didn't even know she was there! She was good as gold. The first few days we figured we couldn't do what we wanted when we wanted too for example get up and go to the pool/beach and sunbathe all day.
No - With a baby you can't just do that, you need to take care of them, so after the first few days we slowly got into a routine where we would get up at 8, go for breakfast or just a drink. Then head to the pool or beach to lay our towels down then play with Amelia for a little while. Then we would take her for a walk to get her to sleep then rush back and sunbathe for an hour and when she'd wake up feed and play again then grab some lunch and do the same again making sure she got a nap before she got overtired. She would nap longer in the afternoon so we usually had about an hour and a half to two hours at this point. So we can't complain really. The most annoying thing was the noise and inconsiderate people! At the pool people would move the sun loungers next to us make so much noise she'd wake up screaming and we'd feel awkward Not so much a problem at the beach as the wind would block out the sounds.
We would then play with her once she woke up and either go in the pool or the sea depending on where we were. After than we would go for a walk, grab a cocktail...or two down the beach front then head back to the apartment and get ready for the evening. We soon realised we couldn't go out late like we would have done if it was just the two of us. So we decided to go for food around 6pm most nights. I would feed Amelia before leaving and some nights she would go to sleep whilst we had our meal, other nights she was awake and we would go for a walk after eating to get her to sleep then grab a drink back at the resort before heading to the apartment.
So overall we had a fantastic holiday, and after figuring out the whole routine thing we had to down to a T! I packed way to many clothes for Amelia as it was so hot she slept in just her nappy every night and was in a swimsuit or just a dress in the daytime. Next time I will pack less for her, as half of it didn't get used. Amelia enjoyed her first time abroad and we can't wait to go again! She will be older then so I'm hoping it will be easier and we can have more time sunbathing as I am still nursing I was in the shade most of the time. She will be able to play and run around then too making it easier for us.
Here are some photographs of our holiday. If you have any questions about going abroad for the first time with a baby then feel free to ask away. I will be writing up a few posts about this topic in the near future.
