Amelia's first baby rice

Well, Amelia will be turning 4 months on Wednesday so we decided to try her on some baby rice. I am still breastfeeding her and seeing as she is a pretty big baby I don't think she is getting enough milk to fill her up. Hence why she's still up every night to feed and feeds every 2 hours during the day. I know most health visitors/doctors recommend waiting up until 6 months but it does say on the packet 4 months also I think it's best to go with your own instinct. Only YOU know your own child and how they sleep etc. After all...my mum started me on baby food at 3 months as I was such a big baby and it's not done me any harm. I will be taking Amelia to her 4 month check up on Monday so I will speak to my health visitor then too.

Firstly I don't think she had a clue what was going on, she was probably thinking that's not mummy's milk! How the hell do you expect me to eat that off a spoon!? But after a few spoonfuls she finally got the grasp of things and realised how it was working. Mind you, most of it ended up down her bib! She started getting fussy towards the end and tried grabbing the bowl and spoon off me and tipping it over which made quiet a mess, but she did finish it all off. I only gave her 1 spoonful of the baby rice and 10-12 spoonful's of milk which I had pumped.

I can't wait to feed her other stuff soon like butternut squash, carrots, peas, banana's etc. I will blend them all myself on a regular basis and freeze them for the week/month. That will be fun!

First spoonful, guess she didn't like that haha!

I'd rather eat my fingers...

Such a mess!
All done :-)

  1. What a beauty!! I agree with you, don't listen to the "experts", listen to what your gut tells you. We started our boys on rice cereal before 6 months too. And they are just fine! :)

  2. Just like you said...only YOU know! Sometimes we put our trust in pediatricians more than our own mother instinct...not all degrees are better than God given instinct! Haha. You're doing great little mama. Keep it up! You'll learn even more in few months to come!

    1. Haha, it was priceless, tried it again and she did better. Yeah I don't think she's getting anywhere near enough milk from me. So that's why I need to bulk it up but I don't want to put her on formula just yet :)

  5. You are 100% right- only you know what's right for your baby. Follow that mama instinct!

  6. Babies stomachs aren't even able to digest rice or grains until they reach about 12 months or older. It might not show as reactions now but can sensitize a new developing digestive system. I try non-grains, homemade organic baby food mixed with breast milk first. Its sad that most us doctors have less then a few hours of nutrional training and I went into my first baby thinking that standard grains were ok until I really did some research. Hope this helps, it just erks me our babies arent being given the best start even when we try are best because of where most of the info comes from.

    1. Thanks for your comment. However, all babies are different, I do breastfeed so I give her the rice with that so she's still getting the nutrients. If you ask the older generation now they will all say they gave they're babies this and that from 3months+ and didn't do any harm. I will look into the organic baby food though thanks!
