Amelia finally came into the world two weeks late on the 22nd of April 2012 at 2:18am on her grandmothers birthday too! I was due on the 8th and got induced on the 21st at 13 days over. I was booked in at the hospital at 10.30am. Well we arrived and had a tour of the labour ward, had lunch then waited for the midwife to come and see us. She explained the process and then inserted one prostin tablet at around 12.30pm It was then a waiting game, I was told to keep active and walk around the hospital, so that's what we did. At around 3pm the pains were getting worse and I could feel cramping. I could barely walk. So we headed back to the ward as I was being monitored at 3.30pm. By then I was in even more pain so they gave me co-codamol but I threw them back up and couldn't stop being sick then.
So we stayed on the ward and waited. At around 6.30pm dinner arrived, then we started to watch the voice. I was then given gas and air as the pain was unbearable, it felt like my hips were being separated. The midwife came by then and said I wouldn't have progressed much at all so there was nothing they could do until later on but decided to check me as I had my show when I went to the bathroom earlier. The midwife was shocked, I was 8-9cm!! She didn't think i would have been at all. She then had me rushed to the delivery suite as I was contracting regularly. They hooked up back up to the monitors and gave me more gas and air (I cant believe I hadn't had any other medication by then). They said i was contracting a minute apart and they were very intense.
It was now around 10pm, I asked for an epidural but they wouldn't give me one as I'd been sick too much. But they eventually agreed to give me one but I had to wait for the anesthesiologist as he was in theater. By this time it was 12pm. My boyfriend went for a smoke as nothing was happening much. When he came back they had broken my waters and I was getting ready to push. I pushed when contractions came but I was in so much pain. Finally the anesthesiologist came and gave me the epidural he was unsure whether to give it to me as I was 10cm dilated already. I didn't even feel it go in and kept still. Carried on trying to push but the epidural had slowed down my contractions even though the pain had eased off slightly. I could still tell when I was having contractions by feeling my belly.
As nothing was happening and they needed to get baby out, as they could see her head they decided to prep me up for emergency c-section but go to theatre to attempt a forceps delivery. So i signed the papers and they got me ready and my boyfriend went to change into his scrubs. Next thing I knew I was in theater and everyone was getting ready putting numbing stuff on my back and then spraying me with this cold stuff to see if i could feel it. My whole body was shaking from the adrenaline and the spinal so I had to be held down. My boyfriend was allowed back in then. I was told to push when I felt the next contraction, so I did and her head was out, then told to push again and the rest of her body came out. She was placed on top of my stomach/chest and all I thought was "wow she is big" her cord was then cut and she was taken through to another room to be checked and weighed. My boyfriend went through too. I was then stitched back up. I couldn't feel anything just a bit of tugging now and again. Then they bought her back in to me and we went through to another room so I could be monitored before going back to the labour ward.
I'm so pleased that I never ended up having a c-section, even if my recovery was just as bad. I was in hospital for 2 days after the birth, I couldn't move out of bed my whole body was in agony. I couldn't even sit up to reach for my baby when she was crying and had to ring the buzzer for the midwifes to get her out so I could feed her and change her. I wouldn't change it for the world, and Im glad she arrived safely even if it was 2 weeks late.
